What is Fashion Week and where did it come from?

Fashion Week, FW - is one of the main events in the fashion world, in which designers, fashion houses and brands demonstrate new collections. It is fashion weeks that set the trends for the current and future seasons.

What is Fashion Week and where did it come from?

It all started, oddly enough, in Paris, when marketers of different brands dressed women in their new outfits and sent them to public places. For visiting, the places of the greatest gathering of people were chosen - salons, hippodromes, parks.

The first fashion show dates back to 1903 and was organized by the New York store Ehrich Brothers. Gradually, the trend for screenings grew throughout the country and abroad. The first fashion week was held in 1943 - it was held in New York. The main goal of that fashion week was to demonstrate an alternative to French clothes, because during the Second World War it was impossible to go to Paris.

First Fashion Week

Fashion weeks are divided into types:

  • Big Four Fashion Weeks are the most significant, setting trends, Weeks, held 2 times a year - in autumn (usually in September) and spring in 4 cities - New York, London, Milan and Paris.
  • Haute Couture Fashion Weeks - haute couture shows, held by fashion houses that are part of the Paris Fashion Syndicate, are held 2 times a year - in January and July;
  • Other Fashion Weeks - held in different cities of the world at different times throughout the year, do not have a big impact on the fashion industry.

Read more about each species a little below, but for now, briefly about how the event is going.

How fashion week is held

About 1-2 days before the official start of Fashion Week, events have already begun. Usually these are parties and social events.

  • After the official start of fashion week in a particular city, a series of shows begins - on the first day there are usually fewer of them. Before the release of the first model, according to the observation of the participants, about 30-40 minutes pass - this delay is done intentionally, and is used so that the paparazzi can photograph the stars. World celebrities, by the way, always sit in the front row;

  • After the release of the first model, the show of one designer or brand rarely lasts more than 20 minutes;

  • The defile ends with the final stand of all models, as well as the release of the designer who prepared the collection.

According to this plan, every fashion week show takes place.

Of course, sometimes designers depart from the standard rules to attract attention to themselves - they show videos, sing, arrange fireworks, but the "skeleton" of the event almost always remains exactly as we described above.

Big Four Fashion Weeks

The big four are called 4 capitals, which are trendsetters. The Big Four include:

Big Four shows are always, regardless of the circumstances, held twice a year - in spring and autumn. Even in the first year of the pandemic, when mass gatherings were banned, Fashion Weeks were there, but in an online format.

The dates of Fashion Week are always different – every year convenient days are set. So, for example, in the fall of 2021, the graph looked like this:

  • 27 September – 5 October: Paris Fashion Week

The only thing that remains unchanged is order. The series of Fashion Weeks always begins in New York and ends in Paris.

At the shows of the "Big Four", designers demonstrate trends for the next season. That is, what we have seen since September 8 in New York is the spring-summer 2022 collection. Why is this being done? Famous designers set trends for the new season, which adopt mass production. To develop models of clothes, sew them and bring them to stores, you need time - just those six months that pass between the show and the beginning of the season.

Models of clothes shown on the catwalks often undergo changes - they adapt to the modern rhythm of life, but if the clothes are initially practical - they are sewn by the brand or fashion house without changes.

Most often, brands and fashion houses are shown in their own country, that is, if the Fashion House is based in France, then it will show the collection in Paris. However, designers do not have a ban on "moving" - Chanel, for example, no one will prohibit visiting the fashion week in Milan.

Many are interested in the question of who and how establishes the list of participants. In fact, it is a floating system that largely depends on the recognition and overall influence of the brand or designer. And also from its financial stability.

Fashion Week is a very expensive pleasure - you have to pay for the work of models, install light, take care of seats for guests, tune the sound - this list is very large. Of course, a small brand cannot afford such expenses, especially since participation does not always pay off.

You can track the schedule of future shows on the official website of fashion weeks.

Haute Couture Week - Paris Syndicate

Haute Couture Week is an exhibition of haute couture organized by the Paris Fashion Syndicate. The name comes from the French haute couture - high sewing, that is, single pieces of clothing, sewn for the most part by hand.

Only those fashion houses that are part of the Paris Fashion Syndicate – an association for the most authoritative, significant and successful fashion houses in France – can demonstrate couture outfits as part of Haute Couture Fashion Week.

Foreign houses can also get into the Syndicate, but the requirements for them are higher. They are granted the status of corresponding members.

Of the foreigners in the Syndicate are:

Outfits shown as part of Haute Couture Week do not go into mass production. Models can be bought, but not everyone can afford them. One couture dress can cost from 9 thousand to 1 million euros - depending on the materials used, accessories, the number of hours spent. At the moment, the number of buyers of haute couture clothing around the world does not exceed 4,000 people.

Minor Fashion Weeks

We called them secondary simply to facilitate understanding and because they are not part of the Big Four and are part of Haute Couture Fashion Weeks. These are Fashion Weeks, which are held in different cities around the world, but do not have such an impact on the fashion industry, at least on a global scale.

At different times, "simple" Fashion Weeks are held in:

  • Los Angeles;
  • São Paulo;
  • Moscow;
  • St. Petersburg;
  • Tokyo;
  • Helsinki;
  • Shanghai;
  • Berlin;
  • Madrid;
  • Washington;
  • Vienna;
  • Prague;
  • Odessa.

In total, there are about a hundred different fashion weeks from Algeria to New Zealand. Such fashion weeks are held, as a rule, among designers and brands of a particular country and their scale is less than that of the Fashion Weeks of the "Big Four".

Men's Fashion Week

Separately from all, there are shows of men's collections within the framework of the Men's Fashion Week - only men's clothing and trends for the upcoming season are presented here. The show is held twice a year - in January-February and June-July, that is, before the official women's weeks.

Cruise Collection

Cruise Collection, from English. Resort Collection or Cruise Collection is an intermediate show that is shown between the seasonal collections of the Big Four Fashion Weeks.

These are a kind of preliminary collections, on which fashion houses "test the waters" and, as a rule, show the first outlines of what they plan to release on the catwalk as part of the next Fashion Week.

Promising collections include:

  • Pre-Spring or "until spring";
  • Pre-fall, that is, "until autumn".

Pre-Spring is held between May and July, but the exact dates are set each year. As part of the preliminary collection, clothing models are "tested" for the future spring-summer show, which is held in September.

@monsemaison

Pre-fall, respectively, is preliminary for autumn-winter, which is shown in February. Pre-fall is usually not marked by a show, but is released in the form of a lookbook - a collection of professionally shot models of the brand's clothing, presented within a certain collection.

@monsemaison

Initially, when Pre-Collections - Preliminary collections, just appeared, they were aimed at wealthy individuals who went on cruises and resorts - that's why the name "cruise collection" is used. Now the situation has changed, travel has ceased to be the lot of wealthy people, and you can go on vacation even in winter. For this reason, cruise collections are not only swimsuits or light dresses, but sometimes coats.
